My Safe Road

At a Glance:

The My Safe Road initiative is a targeted, data-driven programme designed to significantly reduce road fatalities in high-risk districts across Malaysia. Recognizing that national-level programmes require localised implementation, this initiative focuses on empowering communities to take ownership of their road safety. By identifying and addressing specific local challenges, My Safe Road aims to create safer environments for all road users, particularly motorcyclists and pedestrians, who are disproportionately affected by road crashes.

Our Strategy:

Our strategy centres on a district-level, community-driven approach. We understand that each district faces unique road safety issues, whether it’s high motorcycle usage, poor road conditions, or dangerous intersections. By prioritizing localised interventions, we ensure that solutions are tailored to the specific needs of each community. This involves empowering local stakeholders to actively participate in identifying black spots, developing targeted strategies, and implementing practical solutions. This “for-community, by-community” approach fosters a sense of ownership and ensures the sustainability of safety measures.

Areas of Focus:

  • Targeted Blackspot Treatment: Utilizing data to pinpoint dangerous roads and intersections, enabling the implementation of life-saving solutions.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Enhancing road infrastructure through improvements such as better road lighting, clearer signage, speed control measures (e.g., speed bumps, roundabouts), and safer intersection designs.
  • Stronger Law Enforcement: Partnering with local law enforcement agencies to enhance compliance with traffic regulations, including speed limits and helmet usage.
  • Public Awareness and Education: Engaging drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians in targeted road safety campaigns, emphasizing the importance of safe road behaviours.
  • Community-Driven Approach: Empowering local communities to take charge of road safety in their neighbourhoods, fostering a sense of responsibility and promoting sustainable change.
  • Data-Driven Interventions: Using the success of the initial 2017 Batu Pahat initiative, where fatalities were reduced by up to 20%, as a model for current and future implementations.
