Aggressive Driving: Keep Calm and Drive Safely

Aggressive driving includes behaviours like tailgating (following too closely), unsafe lane changes, running red lights, excessive honking, or generally hostile actions towards other road users. It creates dangerous and unpredictable situations.

Why is Aggressive Driving Dangerous?

  • Increased Crash Risk: Unpredictable manoeuvres give other drivers less time to react, leading to collisions.
  • Road Rage: Aggressive actions can escalate conflicts with other drivers, sometimes leading to dangerous confrontations.
  • Stress & Impaired Judgement: Driving angry or stressed impairs your focus and decision-making.

Consequences in Malaysia:

  • Specific aggressive acts (e.g., reckless driving, running red lights) are traffic offences with fines and demerit points.
  • Causing an accident due to aggressive driving can lead to severe legal penalties, especially if injuries occur.

Tips to Avoid Aggressive Driving (and Dealing with It):

  • Manage Stress: Avoid driving when overly stressed or angry. Practice relaxation techniques if needed.
  • Allow Extra Time: Running late is a major trigger for aggressive behaviour.
  • Maintain Safe Following Distance: Give yourself space to react (the “two-second rule” or more is a good guide). Don’t tailgate.
  • Use Signals: Clearly indicate your intentions when turning or changing lanes.
  • Be Patient & Courteous: Allow others to merge, avoid unnecessary honking, and practice tolerance.
  • Don’t Engage: If you encounter an aggressive driver, don’t retaliate or make eye contact. Prioritize your own safety, slow down or pull over if necessary, and let them pass. Report truly dangerous driving to authorities if possible and safe to do so.

MKJR promotes courteous and responsible road behaviour through awareness campaigns, aiming for a safer driving culture.
