Safe School Zone: Protecting Our Children's Journey
Children are among our most vulnerable road users, and their journey to and from school should be safe. MKJR’s “Safe School Zone” initiative focuses specifically on creating protected environments around schools nationwide. By advocating for lower speed limits and improved infrastructure, we aim to drastically reduce risks and provide peace of mind for parents, educators, and the community.
Our Approach: Collaboration & Targeted Investment
We work collaboratively with the Ministry of Education, local authorities (PBTs), schools, and Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBGs). Our strategy involves strongly advocating for the adoption and enforcement of safer speed limits (like 30 km/h) and prioritizing support for infrastructure improvements, particularly in rural or high-risk school areas where simple, cost-effective solutions can make a big difference.
Key Activities & Focus Areas
- Promoting & Supporting 30 km/h Speed Limits: Actively advocating for the implementation and strict enforcement of lower speed limits in designated school zones.
- Improving School Zone Infrastructure: Supporting enhancements such as high-visibility pedestrian crossings, clear warning signage, traffic-calming measures (speed humps, raised crossings), safer drop-off/pick-up points, and adequate lighting.
- Raising Public Awareness: Conducting campaigns to educate drivers on the critical importance of slowing down and being extra vigilant around schools.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Working closely with educational authorities and local councils to integrate safety features into school area planning.
