My Safe Road: Safer Roads, Empowered Communities
The “My Safe Road” initiative is MKJR’s flagship data-driven program tackling high road fatality rates at the district level. Recognizing that local conditions require tailored solutions, this initiative empowers communities to identify specific road safety challenges – from dangerous intersections (‘blackspots’) to areas with high motorcycle traffic – and implement high-impact interventions. Our goal is safer local environments for everyone, especially vulnerable motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Our Approach: Community-Driven & Data-Informed
Our strategy is rooted in a community-driven, “for-community, by-community” approach, supported by robust data analysis. We collaborate closely with local stakeholders (councils, police, community leaders, residents) to pinpoint specific risks and develop targeted solutions. This ensures local ownership and the long-term sustainability of safety measures. The success of early implementations, such as the Batu Pahat initiative which saw significant fatality reductions, informs our ongoing efforts.
Key Activities & Focus Areas
- Targeted Black Spot Treatment: Using accident data to identify and implement engineering solutions at high-risk locations (dangerous roads, intersections).
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Advocating for and supporting improvements like better road lighting, clearer signage, traffic-calming measures (speed bumps, roundabouts), and safer intersection designs.
- Enhanced Enforcement Support: Partnering with local police (PDRM) to improve compliance with key traffic laws, such as speed limits and helmet usage, in target areas.
- Localised Awareness Campaigns: Developing and delivering safety messages tailored to specific local risks and road user groups within the district.
- Community Empowerment: Facilitating workshops and platforms for local residents to actively participate in identifying problems and creating safety action plans for their neighbourhoods.
