Driving Under the Influence: Never Drive Impaired

Driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, illegal drugs, or even certain medications that impair driving ability is extremely dangerous and illegal in Malaysia. Impairment affects judgment, coordination, concentration, and reaction time, dramatically increasing the risk of causing a severe crash.

Why is Impaired Driving Dangerous?

  • Impaired Judgement: Difficulty assessing risks, distances, and speeds.
  • Slowed Reaction Time: Takes longer to perceive and react to hazards.
  • Reduced Coordination: Affects steering, braking, and general vehicle control.
  • Decreased Concentration: Difficulty focusing on the driving task and surroundings.

Malaysian Law (Section 45A):

  • Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987 strictly prohibits driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
Malaysia enforces legal Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) limits.
  • Penalties for DUI are severe and can include heavy fines, mandatory imprisonment, and long-term driving license suspension, especially for repeat offences or if causing injury/death.

Tips for Preventing Impaired Driving:

  • Zero Tolerance: The only safe amount of alcohol or impairing drugs before driving is ZERO.
  • Plan Ahead: If you plan to drink, arrange alternative transport before you start:
    • Designate a sober driver.
    • Use taxis or e-hailing services.
    • Use public transport.
    • Plan to stay overnight.
  • Understand Drug Impairment: Be aware that illegal drugs AND some prescription or over-the-counter medications can impair driving. Read labels and consult your doctor or pharmacist about driving restrictions.
  • Don’t Let Friends Drive Impaired: If a friend is impaired, take their keys and help them arrange a safe ride home.
  • Be Aware the Morning After: Alcohol can remain in your system overnight. You may still be impaired the next morning.

MKJR advocates for zero tolerance towards impaired driving, supports strict enforcement, and conducts public awareness campaigns on the devastating consequences.
